Universal Studios Beijing Adopts Honeywell’s Environmentally Preferable Solstice® N40 Refrigerant

Lower global-warming-potential solution assists Universal in meeting energy efficiency, environmental goals in cold storage

MORRIS PLAINS, N.J., April 7, 2021 – Honeywell today announced that Universal Studios Beijing, an upcoming Universal theme park in Beijing as part of Universal Beijing Resort, has adopted Honeywell Solstice® N40 (R-448A) refrigerant as a lower global-warming potential (GWP) solution to achieve energy savings and carbon footprint reduction.

Universal Studios Beijing is the first cold storage warehouse owner in China to implement Solstice N40 on a large scale. The theme park upholds high standards in energy efficiency and environmental protection while striving to implement top-notch international management standards. The new system is expected to help improve refrigeration system energy efficiency by 10 to 15 percent.

Solstice® N40 (R-448A) is a non-flammable, non-ozone-depleting substance with lower global-warming-potential (GWP), compared to R-22, R-404A, and R-507A, legacy refrigerants for cold storage.

To meet hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) phasedown requirements in support of the Kigali Amendment, and in alignment with the Chinese government’s initiative to reduce the use of energy and emissions, cold storage warehouse owners are seeking alternative solutions that are reliable, practical and help reduce carbon footprint. Since its release in 2015, Honeywell’s Solstice N40 has become an increasingly popular  replacement refrigerant for R-404A/R-507A in the cold storage industry, following its adoption and installation in more than 30,000 supermarkets globally. In comparison to R-404A, Solstice N40 is estimated to reduce CO2 emissions by 70% for Universal Studios Beijing.

“Solstice N40 is a practical and economical choice for customers, to support sustainable operation while reducing energy consumption costs. This environmentally preferable refrigerant reaffirms customers’ commitment to the environment,” said Deming Yan, Chief Engineer of Shanghai Sino Refrigeration Equipment Engineering Co.,Ltd., construction contractor of the cold storage project. “With the growing number of market players in China adopting higher standards in environmental protection and cost effectiveness, we will continue to partner with our customers like Universal Studios Beijing to realize social responsibility and sustainable development.”

"Solstice N40 has become the trusted choice for both commercial and industrial refrigeration customers globally to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption while meeting various stringent regulations,” said Tom Liu, vice president and general manager of Honeywell Advanced Materials, Asia Pacific.  “It is really exciting to see Universal Studios Beijing leading the way in China’s cold storage industry, converting to more environmentally preferable refrigerants. We will continue to partner with our customers to realize social responsibility and sustainable development in China.”

Solstice N40 is an ASHRAE A1 (nonflammable) refrigerant with GWP of 1273 that is 68% lower than both of R-404A (GWP of 3943) and R-507A (GWP of 3985),  with capability to improve energy efficiency of the system and protect the environment.

The upcoming Universal Studios Beijing would become the fifth Universal Studios-branded theme park in the world, and the third in Asia, after Universal Studios Japan and Universal Studios Singapore.

Honeywell is a world leader in the development, manufacture and supply of refrigerants that are sold worldwide under the Solstice® and Genetron® brand names for a range of applications, including refrigeration and building and automobile air conditioning.  Honeywell and its suppliers have completed a  billion dollar investment program in research and development, and new capacity based on Honeywell’s hydrofluorolefin technology. Worldwide adoption of Solstice products have resulted in the reduction of more than 200 million metric tons of greenhouse gases to date, equal to eliminating emissions from more than 42 million cars.
